Fernando Alonso ends Red Bull and Mercedes speculation with new Aston Martin contract | F1 | Sport

Fernando Alonso has officially signed a new contract with Aston Martin, meaning he will not be joining Mercedes or Red Bull next season. The Spaniard had been at the centre of speculation linking him with a move elsewhere but has decided to commit his future to Aston Martin for at least one more year.

Alonso’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of this season, raising plenty of questions about where he would be driving in 2025. Mercedes were said to have been weighing up a move for the 42-year-old to replace Lewis Hamilton, who will leave the Silver Arrows to join Ferrari next year.

Red Bull were also linked with Alonso earlier this month, with Sergio Perez only tied down until the end of 2024. However, it has been revealed that Alonso will be staying at Aston Martin next season after signing a new contract with the British outfit.

The news was confirmed via a short statement from Alonso on the team’s website, which simply read: “I am here to stay.”
